Öğe Analysis of changes in grain production on fruit and vegetable cultivation areas in Turkey through geographically weighted regression(Academic Journals, 2014) Gocer, KenanThe main purpose of this paper is to address the question of whether and how farmers have tried to increase agricultural productivity after the regulatory role of governments on the agricultural industry has been reduced due to financial crises. The relationship between agricultural sowing area shifts (grain to fruit, grain to vegetables, vegetables to fruit) were explored by using geographically weighted regression model. This model showed how the decrease of grain sowing areas led to an increase of fruit and vegetable sowing area in Turkey. It was demonstrated that farmers tended to choose more productive agricultural crops in order to address agricultural sustainability problems. Geographical information system data sets regarding the years between 2000 and 2010 were obtained from 923 districts. The results of the analysis showed a strong relationship between changes in grain, vegetable and fruit areas. According to geographically weighted regression, the variation of local coefficients ranged from - 0.62 to 0.34. Because of the productivity factors, grain and vegetable areas have been replaced by fruit production. However, Turkey will be faced with food security problems in the future due to the decrease of grain cultivation. The increasing opportunity for irrigation has had a profoundly important role in shifting from grain to vegetable and fruit production.Öğe Completing the missing link in building design process: Enhancing post-occupancy evaluation method for effective feedback for building performance(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2015) Gocer, Ozgur; Hua, Ying; Gocer, KenanThis paper provides a review of the improvements in the evaluation of building performance and introduces a new method for post-occupancy evaluation (POE) to complete the missing link in the building design process. Existing studies were reviewed to understand the possible reasons for the missing link of building performance feedback. The intention of this paper is to set out a new vision for how future post-occupancy evaluation can close the building performance feedback loop to better inform building design. The spatial mapping method adopted extends the use of building information modeling (BIM), which has shown great potential for the future of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, and uses geographical information systems (GIS). which is a powerful tool for analyzing and visualizing relationships between geographical units and their data. This study explores how to establish a communication platform for different stakeholders in order to engage them in the collaborative effort of continuous building performance improvement by using the results of POE embedded into BIM. In this paper, the experiences of a POE study of a LEED Platinum building and a historical building on a university campus are reported as examples to illustrate the proposed new method. Esra; Gocer, KenanPurpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors that underlie the internationalization of small-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and to identify the most significant factors/variables that are related to the internationalization process of these firms in Turkey. Design/methodology/approach - The data for the analysis conducted in this study were collected from 471 owners/managers of SMEs in Turkey. This study examined the relationship of all variables in the internationalization of the small firms through use of Pearson and regression analysis. Findings - This study showed that the ability to be an exporter was related to the business age and size, the intensity of R&D, the growth rate of the domestic markets and the planning for export, pursued by SMEs. Research limitations/implications - The cross-sectional nature of this study may have limitations in regards to observing the direction and causality of some of the variables. The caution should be also taken when generalizing the findings beyond the scope of this study. The findings are limited to Turkish SMEs. Originality/value - A model in this study combines three classes of variables - firm, environmental, and management. Most empirical research has been concentrated on investigating one of these variables in relation to international performance. Earlier empirical research also concentrates on established larger firms and has not taken small firms into account. This study fills in a gap in the empirical research in terms of combining these variables to explain the internationalization process and studying the effect of these variables on smaller firms.Öğe Motivating Factors, Benefits, and Challenges for Students Who Study Abroad(Int Management Development Assoc-Imda, 2013) Unsal, Falui; Movassaghi, Hormoz; Gocer, KenanThis study, based on a survey of students at a Comprehensive college in New York, examined the importance of certain 'program and non-program related factor, and location that influenced their decisions to study abroad. It also assessed the level of satisfaction that students felt with different aspects of the programs that they participated in. Findings indicate that the academic value in terms of intellectual and personal growth, career enhancement potential, ability to graduate on time, cost, and availability of financial aid were the most important program-related considerations, while exposure to other cultures and desire to live independently in a foreign environment were the most important non-program related factors that weighed in students' decisions.Öğe Spatial mapping of occupant satisfaction and indoor environment quality in a LEED platinum campus building(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2014) Hua, Ying; Gocer, Ozgar; Gocer, KenanThis paper reports a post-occupancy evaluation study of a LEED Platinum building on a university campus. A multiple-tool POE approach with GIS-based spatial mapping method was used to analyze and visualize the survey results of building occupant satisfaction and the measured indoor environment quality. The occupants were overall satisfied with the indoor environment in their workspaces in the building of study, though thermal comfort was comparatively low with high percentage of occupants reporting their workspaces too cold. Air movement was found to be lower than preferred by the occupants, especially in interior offices where CO2 level was also predominantly higher. Light levels in the building were found higher than preferred. Electric lighting power density installed did not reflect the fact that daylight is available for most of the lab and office spaces. Satisfaction with speech privacy was found lower in individual offices related to the construction detail of the connection between curtain wall and interior walls. Linking performance outcomes with spatial information improves POE data management. Spatial mapping allows reasons that cause occupant discomfort and dissatisfactory measured performance to be identified more intuitively and makes it potentially easier to communicate POE results with architects, engineers and facility management professionals, in order to engage them in the collaborative effort of continuous building performance improvement.
