Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can proliferate unlimitedly, have the ability to self-renew, differentiate into specialized cells, repair damaged tissue, and transform into many different cell types in vivo or under suitable conditions in vitro. These cells vary in their differentiation characteristics and sources from which they are obtained. Along with its self-renewal feature spermatogonial stem cell is an adult stem cell type that also plays role in the formation of mature spermatozoon. These cells also show pluripotency by gaining the ability to differentiate into three germ layers of embryo development under appropriate laboratory conditions. Thanks to these properties, spermatogonial stem cells constitute an important potential in both infertility and regenerative medicine treatment. In this review, general information about the properties of stem cells is given, the place of spermatogonial stem cells among stem cells, their differentiation characteristics and distinguishing properties are explained. In addition, studies on isolation, transplantation and culture protocols of these cells are focussed and the role and importance of these studies in treatment are discussed. © 2022, Ebru Bagci.
