dc.description.abstract | To define the wave packets, wavelet analysis has been applied on horizontal wind speed data. This is the more objective methodology to detect wave packets. Horizontal wind speed, meridional and zonal components based on radiosonde launches at Göztepe (Istanbul) between 1993 and 1997 are analyzed. The vertical profiles of meridional and zonal wind components at 850, 700, 500, 300 and 100 hPa pressure heights are transformed by using the Daubechies wavelet and the Morlet wavelet. High wind speed variance observations are identified as gravity wave packets. A strong seasonal cycle and maximum wave variance have been observed in winter. © 2006 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
