Öğe Accreditation for academic quality(2008) Senel S.; Yalcin D.; Yildirim O.As it is well-known, the latest trend in academia has been the rapid growth of online or distance learning courses. Globalization makes mobility easy and possible. That is why a graduate has the opportunity to find not only a nationwide but also a worldwide occupation. In most countries in the world, the function of accreditation for educational institutions is conducted by a government ministry of education. The purpose of this study is presenting the goal of the accreditation. The goal of accreditation is to ensure that education provided by institutions of higher education meets acceptable levels of quality. In order to present the educational philosophy that monitors the international values and standards, ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) in engineering education and international standards in medical education are taken into consideration. Engineering departments of a few universities have been accredited with respect to the ABET criteria. In medical education a few universities have been initiating the accreditation process in Turkey. In this study, the accreditation and assessment methods in higher education are discussed.Öğe Adjective check list and psychological stress: Evidence from Turkey(2008) Yerkoc T.; Kurt D.; Bayramoglu O.; Yildirim H.; Yildirim O.It is called stress when an individual begins to act different physically and mentally as a result of the fact that he or she is affected by the environment he or she lived and worked in. To block or balance the process of adaptation to stressful circumstances of people can be in different ways. However, it may not be possible to get rid of stress completely. So that, an individual who is overstressed can suffer aggressiveness, nonconfidence, difficulties in focusing, chronic tiredness, tension, sadness, anxiety, anger, poor health, depression, etc. Naturally, this causes the individual, who is overstressed, to have mental, physical, and psychological illnesses. As a result, it becomes more difficult for the individual to adapt his or her social environment. In this research, the stress levels of the parents having disabled students was assessed using Abidin's (1990) Parenting Stress Index (PSI) on a sample of 190 parents. According to the results, it has been achieved that parents who has low socio-economic status, are exposed to more stress to the extent of parenting distress.Öğe Discriminating emotional intelligence-based competencies of IT employees and salespeople(2007) Yildirim O.Purpose - This study aims at investigating emotional intelligence based on competencies for sales and IT people. Design/methodology/approach - A study was conducted on 111 employees of 12 firms from four different sectors in which firms benefited extensively from IT and sales activities. Findings - Emotional Competency Inventory (ECI, 2.0) was used for assessing the participants' emotional competencies. Independent sample t-test results showed that IT and sales employees were significantly different from each other in all main dimensions of ECI except for self-management. Also two separate discriminant analyses were conducted in four dimensions of EI and all emotional competencies in order to determine the ones that discriminate two groups of employees. According to the results of the discriminant analysis in four dimensions of ECI, except self-management, the other three dimensions had significant loads to discriminate all groups. However, on competency basis there was no dominant emotional competency that separated one group of employees from the other. The results showed that it was more meaningful to use clusters of competencies for constructing competency models of these two positions than to use single competencies. Research limitations/implications - Further researches should investigate different positions rather than sales and IT people. Also researches focusing on specific sectors can reveal more specific competency models. Practical implications - Facts of the study showed that companies should consider differences depending on the tasks for their staff while designing training programs in terms of developing EI-based competency. These programs for sales or IT people should focus on competency clusters rather than specific single competencies. Originality/value - Increasing importance of emotional intelligence and its direct relationship to superior performance lead organizations to enhance their current employees' emotional intelligence and to hire new ones with higher emotional intelligence. This paper contributes to HR and training specialists by providing them with knowledge about how to use emotional competencies effectively in their applications. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.Öğe Internet addiction research in the school of vocational studies: Evidence from Turkey(2008) Kurt D.; Tekin A.; Yildirim O.As a growing trend in the world, internet-based remote education both in governmental and private education institutes is getting popular in Turkey as it is to be all over the world. Internet-based education models give learners the chance to interact with the system. The aim of this research is to examine the relationship between personality and internet addiction of the students of Vocational school in a few of private University in Istanbul, Turkey. There is a significant correlation between the student' personality which are depicted via adjective checklist and the student' internet addiction. Adjective Check List (ACL) items consist of adjectives which are words and/or phrases used for daily descriptions in Turkish Language. The scale composed of 25 items is examined for psychometric properties and internal consistency. In this research, Internet Addiction Inventory and ACL were conducted at the same time to a sample of 254 students of School of Vocational Studies. Internet addiction and personality correlates of ACL are of interest on two counts. It is important to know what variables may be confounded with tendency of internet usage.Öğe Lateral displacement of a Gaussian beam(2007) Yildirim O.In this paper, we investigate the the lateral displacement of a Gaussian beam by a conductive thin slab is investigated. A description of the Gaussian beam and a lateral displacement of Gaussian beam at a conductive thin slab is given. We construct a plane wave representation of a Gaussian beam incident upon a homogeneous, lossless, isotropic conductive slab. The waves inside and outside the slab are solved analitically by matching the conductive boundary conditions at the interface. Numerical results including the effect of the conductivity on the thin slab are given by using plane wave representation of the Gaussian beam.Öğe Relationship between emotional intelligence and foreign language learning(2008) Tekin A.; Yildirim H.; Yildirim O.The increasing number of recent researches indicates that emotional intelligence is more important than IQ in many fields. In literature, many quantitative findings indicate that there is a significant relationship between academic achievement and emotional intelligence skills. In other words, analysis indicates that emotional intelligence skills can serve as a indicator of academic achievement and effective learning. The main focus of this research is to discuss the relationship between emotional intelligence skills and academic achievement in foreign language and explore how their relationship may influence language learning. The sample data for this research is 372 School of Vocational Studies students in Istanbul. Thus, this research aimed at exploring the relationship between academic achievement (effective learning) and emotional intelligence skills. In the research, participants emotional intelligence was assessed by the Emotional Competence Inventory (ECI, 2nd Version) developed by Boyatzis and Goleman. According to the results, a strong relationship (r>0,40) was found between academic achievement and emotional intelligence skills.
