Öğe (Architectural) design research through reflection: a sub-approach under research by design(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2022) Uzunkaya, Asli; Paker Kahvecioglu, NurbinPurpose This study is based on a research approach proposal aiming to reveal tacit knowledge that shapes architectural design processes through subjective accumulations and tools. With the premise that design embodies tacit and personal knowledge, it proposes an alternative way to decipher this subjective medium. Design/methodology/approach The proposed research approach, (architectural) design research through reflection, basically belongs to research by design method and narrowed in the focus of reflection. It enables to study how tacit knowledge functions within processes of architectural design without being its very subject. The proposal and the product of the approach, revealing diagram, are developed through the architect's tools and the involvement of the researchers in the process. It is also supported by a conceptual basis created from literature on reflection. Findings By means of the proposal, the reflective accumulation of the subjects, that is, the tacit knowledge, is investigated in relation to practice. The revealing diagram is presented as a tool through which relations can be interpreted within the framework of subjects. It is a tool by which the subjects, tools and processes of the architectural design product can be analysed. Originality/value The study contributes to architectural research by shifting the perspective on reflective knowledge that shapes design processes.Öğe Deciphering architectural knowledge as reflective practice: revealing map(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2020) Uzunkaya, Asli; Kahvecioglu, Nurbin PakerThis study attempts to reveal how reflective knowledge shapes architectural design. With the premise that design embodies personal knowledge, it proposes an alternative way to decipher this subjective medium. It is predicated on the idea that architects have lifelong reflections along with in or on a specific action. With an aim to draw attention to this, a revealing map for reflective practice as research based on architects' journals is proposed. The study progresses through the instrument of two core adaptations from literature. Reinterpreting Christopher Frayling's views on design research and the effort to move Bryan Lawson's thoughts on reflection one step further are the pillars of the study. The themes on reflection which are determined in the adaptation phases are traced in the journals of a participant who is both active in practice and academia; and discussed through a map by focusing on their relations. Combining and simultaneously searching practice and research presented the possibility to study reflective processes of architectural design without being its very subject; and to research practice with ability to enlarge or narrow according to time and person. The study contributes to architectural research by shifting the perspective on reflective knowledge that shapes design processes.Öğe PLACE OR NON-PLACE: A COMPARATIVE APPRAISAL ON PLACE THEORIES(Stef92 Technology Ltd, 2014) Uzunkaya, Asli; Kerestecioglu, Funda; Koca, Senem KaymazAlong with modernism 'space', one of the main interests of architecture, started to be handled as an empty, abstract and measurable notion. This approach also brought about many criticisms that mainly centered on the issues such as loss of meaning in space, dedifferentiation of space and estrangement from people-oriented space design. At the same time a series of studies which aimed to re-fill in space -with meaning- introduced architectural literature with a new notion: 'Place'. 'Place', which was put forward against the abstract 'space' of modernism, was opened up for discussion in a broad scope which tried to re-explore of relationship between space and its environment, re-product of context and re-relate space with the concepts of belonging, meaning and experience. In this respect, this research focuses to examine the change which this discussion has undergone until today; and methodologically divides place theories in two main chapters: 'Defences/Arguments of Notion of Place' and 'Critical Thinkings on Notion of Place'. 'Defences/Arguments of Notion of Place' are organised in three sub-chapters each of which has examined place from different point of views. These sub-chapters are named as 'Place Against the Abstract Space, and Phenomenological Approach', 'Context and Structualism' and 'Regionalism and Critical Regionalism'. On the other hand, 'Critical Thinkings on Notion of Place', which has focused on reproducing notion of place -while transforming it-, are examined in four sub-chapters. These are named as 'Non-Place', 'Disengagement from Context, and Post-Structualism', 'Becoming Architecture, and Deterritorialization' and 'Social Place'. The appraisal of 'place' that has been carried out by being organised within this methodological scope along the research is schematised in the conclusion part of the research. It should be noted that the research produces a sequence of notions that are open to comparison/interpretation through the schemes. Moreover, through such an appraisal on place theories raising awareness on relationship between architecture and place and generating a basis for comparison/interpretation of place theories are the main purposes of this research.
