Öğe A comparison of the financial characteristics of group affiliated and independent firms in Turkey(2003) Gunduz L.; Tatoglu E.This study delineates overall financial characteristics of the Turkish non-financial firms listed in the Istanbul Stock Exchange across a variety of ownership variables. It essentially compares the performance of affiliates of diversified Turkish business groups with that of unaffiliated firms. The article notes that firms affiliated with diversified Turkish business groups do not differ significantly from unaffiliated firms in terms of accounting and stock market measures of performance. The findings also indicate that the performance measures of family-owned firms are not significantly different from those of non-family-owned firms. Results also suggest that foreign-owned firms perform significantly better in terms of return on assets than domestic firms, but not in terms of other performance measures. © 2003, MCB UP LimitedÖğe An exploratory study of Internet adoption by SMEs in an emerging market economy(2003) Kula V.; Tatoglu E.This paper investigates the nature and extent of Internet use and the role of firm- and industry-specific factors affecting Internet adoption by SMEs in an emerging market economy, Turkey. Based on the evidence from a sample of 237 manufacturing SMEs with Internet access in Turkey, the highest ranked Internet applications with the largest frequency of usage were found to be principally concerned with external communication and gathering information for market and product research. Of the five relevant firm- and industry-specific subgroups, the most significant differences were found for two of the characteristics: amount of resources allocated for export development and international experience of the SME. In general, the SMEs have positive attitudes regarding Internet use. The SMEs are of the opinion that the Internet will become more attractive in future in terms of enhancing company image and being an important tool of doing business electronically. © 2003, MCB UP LimitedÖğe Prioritizing the factors affecting the retailer's supply chain performance(Academy of Management, 2013) Bayraktar E.; Sari K.; Tatoglu E.; Zaim S.[No abstract available]Öğe Resident attitudes toward tourism impacts: The case of kusadasi in turkey(2002) Tatoglu E.; Erdal F.; Ozgur H.; Azakli S.This study aims to identify the perceived impacts of tourism by residents in a community, Kusadasi, located on the Western Turkish coast. Based on a survey of 238 local residents, tourism impacts were assessed by a 33-item tourism impact scale, which measures both belief and affect toward the impact attributes. According to the mean measures, the most strong and favorable perceptions toward tourism impacts are found to be associated with economic, and social and cultural aspects of tourism, while environmental aspects are found to be the least favorable in terms of the perceived impacts of tourism. The study also identified whether there exist any significant differences between socio-demographic variables and resident’s attitudes toward tourism by the analysis of variance. © 2002, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. Attitudes towards a range of strategic planning issues and the use of a variety of tools and techniques of strategic planning are reported. Design/methodology/approach Economic forecasting models, strength, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis, scenario construction and financial analysis of competitors are the most frequently used tools/techniques of analysis. Findings Respondents indicate a very favorable attitude towards strategic planning which is seen as important by firms in the sample. Comparison of foreign-owned firms and local firms indicates that the foreign-owned firms adopt a broader and deeper repertoire of tools and techniques of strategic planning than do local firms, and they tend to believe that the strategy process is more deliberate than do local firms. Research limitations/implications Need to look at the relationship between strategic planning and organizational performance. Practical implications Indicates a need for longer-term planning horizons and more emphases on the implementation and evaluation of strategy. Originality/value One of few studies to examine strategic planning of firms in a transitional economy. © 2006, Emerald Group Publishing Limited
