Öğe ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS IN THE THRACE REGION AND THE FACTOR ANALYSIS OF THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF THESE PROBLEMS(Scibulcom Ltd, 2014) Apak, S.; Kubas, A.; Hurma, H.; Dede, O.The environmental problems in the Thrace region stem from the industrialisation activities carried out during the last 30 years. There are environmental problems such as air pollution, solid waste, water pollution, unplanned construction, traffic, etc. The surface water pollution is the primary problem of the region. Industrialisation also has a positive effect on the local economy of the region although it creates environmental problems. Therefore solutions to the environmental problems should be both functional and compatible with the regional circumstances. In the present study, socio-economic analysis of the environmental problems in the region has been conducted and it has been found that although there are efforts to solve the said problems, these are far from being sufficient. It is suggested that to maintain a sustainable development in the Thrace region, small- and medium-sized enterprises should use joint treatment plants for their wastewaters. Another solution would be to establish a joint waste collection and processing center for Edirne, Tekirdag and kirklareli provinces. Necessary infrastructure investments should be made considering the previous studies on the environmental measures since the economic development in the region will increase rapidly. All institutions and organisations should cooperate in order to contribute to the solution of the environmental problems.Öğe ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS IN TURKISH THRACE REGION, THEIR CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS(Scibulcom Ltd, 2015) Apak, S.; Kubas, A.; Bal, H.; Hurma, H.; Dede, O.The aim of the present study is to examine the environmental problems experienced in the Turkish Thrace region and their causes. The study assesses the social losses caused by the environmental problems in the region by using cluster analysis and puts forward suggestions for a more habitable region and the sustainable use of natural resources. In order to prevent the environmental problems and socio-economic losses in the region, the study proposes that the wastewater of industrial enterprises, as one of the sources of pollution, should be treated in joint treatment plants, which are considered as the solution of the environmental problems caused by industrialisation and settlements in the region. It is also suggested that the development of positive relations between various state institutions and organisations or local governments and the enterprises would provide the opportunity to contribute more to the socio-economic and cultural structure of the region.
