Design Failure in Indoor Shopping Structures: Unconscious Ageism and Inclusive Interior Design in Istanbul
(UNIV POLITECNICA CATALUNYA, 2022) Evcil, Ayşe Nilay; Yalçın Usal, Sariye Selhan
Aging, although not a disability, appears to be stigmatized. People consciously or unconsciously push older adults to the edge of society by not allowing them an active voice and making them feel less important than younger citizens. Older people may experience social and economic stress as well as anxiety, hopelessness, isolation, and depression. Almost all industries are disproportionately focused on developing technological innovations for younger people, not for older adults. Although there is a considerable amount of research on aging populations, research on the indoor design problems that older people encounter every day is scarce. Shopping is a good opportunity for them to get involved in the community, and is an appropriate research area, the aim of which is to prevent architectural barriers to older adults. This study examines indoor shopping design failures that reflect ageism according to older adults’ experiences and requirements. A questionnaire was administered to 198 participants about their experiences in supermarkets in the district of Kadıköy, in Istanbul; Kadıköy is the district with the largest proportion of older adults (17,7%). The results showed that as the need for rest areas and toilets increases, the time spent by older adults in supermarkets declines. Additionally, checkout counters and product display shelves show design problems that constitute indoor accessibility issues. This study concludes by looking at issues in the design of indoor shopping area that contribute to ageist attitudes. We call for inclusive shopping environments to address spatial justice and to eliminate ageism

Sağır Duvarları Sanatla Kazanmak: Duvar Resimleri
(Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi, 2020) Evcil, Ayşe Nilay; Usal, Selhan Yalçın
Wall painting or mural -widespread English equivalent has become one of the popular and interesting art activities of today. Those who accept wall paintings as an art participate in tours to see them in the city, and the municipalities that organize festivals are increasing day by day. Thanks to the wall paintings, it is possible to create attractive and surprising intersections that create the harmony by softening the image on the outer walls of the buildings located in the gloomy, boring, repulsive urban environment. The city of Istanbul has the potential to become famous for itself in the world with its existing murals. Mural festivals supported by municipalities are organized in the city and local and foreign artists bring people together with art. This big metropolis still has many soulless, repulsive and unidentified deaf walls that can be used as canvases. This article is written to illustrate the developing wall painting (mural) by exemplifying the festival organized by the Kadıköy Municipality, Istanbul, to establish its relationship with the city and art. The mural festival, which did not take place in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, was held regularly eight times from 2012 to 2019. In the district, where forty-three wall paintings were reached in 2019, these work both meet deaf walls to the city with art and contribute to cultural tourism. The mural festival, which started in 2012 with the aim of reviving the deterioration area of Yeldeğirmeni, an attraction area, was created in the neighborhood and today the murals have spread to other parts of the municipality.

Universal Design in Interior Architecture Education: The Case of Store Design
(Konya Teknik Üniversitesi Mimarlık ve Tasarım Fakültesi, 2019) Usal, Sariye Selhan Yalçın; Evcil, Ayşe Nilay
Universal design is a user-focused designing approach that involves cultural, physical, mental and dimensional aspects and takes into account the needs of different personal characteristics. This study will analyze the resolutions for different personal characteristics in the design qualities of an apparel store designed by interior architecture students and then utilize the results to make suggestions for curriculum studies in which universal design embedded continuously. In terms of the different user characteristics, the study participants mainly focused on physical and visual disabilities, as well as older people and families with children. According to the participants, the most important issues to be attentive to when making interior space resolutions included reaching the shelves, disabled access ramps at the entrance, size of the circulation area, accessibility of the cashier counter, and size of the changing rooms. Another important issue related to the store design is aesthetic appeal. Serving as an indication of their concern for the commercial success of the store, the participants offered suggestions about the window display and the aesthetic quality of the store.
