Öğe Portrayals of lgbti+characters in the television remakes repertoire in Turkiye(Peter Lang AG, 2023) Erguvan M.Television has been part of life in Turkiye since its inception in the late 1960s, and over 50 years on, it keeps holding its central position in the social, political, economic, and symbolic life of the nation. This article, concentrating on intra-medial transcultural television remakes, a prominent form of audiovisual translation in Turkiye, defines this practice as an isosemiotic, interlingual and inspirational form of translation (Gottlieb, 2007), where a relationship with a given source text is not tightly fixed and unpredictable. Remakes, as potent sources of images and representations, are a form of composite translation carried out by quite a few social agents and conditioned by the target sociocultural, economic, and ideological realities. Considering that the easy accessibility and pervasiveness of television as a medium makes it a feasible research topic on the road a group is portrayed in the mass media at large, the representation of minority groups is of particular interest because these groups are often marginalized in society. In this light, the present article aims to provide an extensive review of the role and position of television remakes within the Turkish television repertoire, with utmost emphasis on what audiovisual norms guide LGBTI+ representation in Turkish television remakes aired on prime-time slots of Turkish television, and whether "interference" (Even-Zohar, 1990) has occurred during the remake process in terms of portraying LGBTI+ characters. © Peter Lang GmbH.
