Öğe Azimuthal Correlations within Exclusive Dijets with Large Momentum Transfer in Photon-Lead Collisions(Amer Physical Soc, 2023) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. Escalante; Fruhwirth, R.; Jeitler, M.The structure of nucleons is multidimensional and depends on the transverse momenta, spatial geometry, and polarization of the constituent partons. Such a structure can be studied using high-energy photons produced in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions. The first measurement of the azimuthal angular correlations of exclusively produced events with two jets in photon-lead interactions at large momentum transfer is presented, a process that is considered to be sensitive to the underlying nuclear gluon polarization. This study uses a data sample of ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at ffiffiffiffiffiffiffi p = 5.02 TeV, corresponding to sNN an integrated luminosity of 0.38 nb-1, collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measured second harmonic of the correlation between the sum and difference of the two jet transverse momentum vectors is found to be positive, and rising, as the dijet transverse momentum increases. A well-tuned model that has been successful at describing a wide range of proton scattering data from the HERA experiments fails to describe the observed correlations, suggesting the presence of gluon polarization effects.Öğe First measurement of the forward rapidity gap distribution in pPb collisions at ?sNN=8.16 TeV(Amer Physical Soc, 2023) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Ero, J.; Del Valle, A. EscalanteFor the first time at LHC energies, the forward rapidity gap spectra from proton-lead collisions for both proton and lead dissociation processes are presented. The analysis is performed over 10.4 units of pseudorapidity at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of ffisffi than in previous measurements of diffractive production in proton-nucleus collisions. For lead dissociation processes, which correspond to the pomeron-lead event topology, the EPOS-LHC generator predictions are a factor of 2 below the data, but the model gives a reasonable description of the rapidity gap spectrum shape. For the pomeron-proton topology, the EPOS-LHC, QGSJET II, and HIJING predictions are all at least a factor of 5 lower than the data. The latter effect might be explained by a significant contribution of ultraperipheral photoproduction events mimicking the signature of diffractive processes. These data may be of significant help in understanding the high energy limit of quantum chromodynamics and for modeling cosmic ray air showers.Öğe Hard color-singlet exchange in dijet events in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Amer Physical Soc, 2021) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Ero, J.Events where the two leading jets are separated by a pseudorapidity interval devoid of particle activity, known as jet-gap-jet events, are studied in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV. The signature is expected from hard color-singlet exchange. Each of the highest transverse momentum (p(T)) jets must have p(T)(jet) > 40 GeV and pseudorapidity 1.4 < vertical bar eta(jet)vertical bar < 4.7, with eta(jet1)eta(jet2) < 0, where jet1 and jet2 are the leading and subleading jets in p(T), respectively. The analysis is based on data collected by the CMS and TOTEM experiments during a low luminosity, high-beta* run at the CERN LHC in 2015, with an integrated luminosity of 0.66 pb(-1). Events with a low number of charged particles with p(T) > 0.2 GeV in the interval vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1 between the jets are observed in excess of calculations that assume only color-exchange. The fraction of events produced via color-singlet exchange, f(CSE), is measured as a function of p(T)(jet2), the pseudorapidity difference between the two leading jets, and the azimuthal angular separation between the two leading jets. The fraction f(CSE) has values of 0.4-1.0%. The results are compared with previous measurements and with predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics. In addition, the first study of jet-gap-jet events detected in association with an intact proton using a subsample of events with an integrated luminosity of 0.40 pb(-1) is presented. The intact protons are detected with the Roman pot detectors of the TOTEM experiment. The f(CSE) in this sample is 2.91 +/- 0.70(stat)(-1.01)(+1.08)(syst) times larger than that for inclusive dijet production in dijets with similar kinematics.Öğe Measurement of the top quark Yukawa coupling from t(t)over-bar kinematic distributions in the dilepton final state in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Amer Physical Soc, 2020) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Ero, J.A measurement of the Higgs boson Yukawa coupling to the top quark is presented using proton-proton collision data at root s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1), recorded with the CMS detector. The coupling strength with respect to the standard model value, Y-t, is determined from kinematic distributions in t (t) over bar final states containing ee, mu mu, or e mu pairs. Variations of the Yukawa coupling strength lead to modified distributions for t (t) over bar production. In particular, the distributions of the t (t) over bar mass of the a system and the rapidity difference of the top quark and antiquark are sensitive to the value of Y-t. The measurement yields a best fit value of Y-t = 1.16(-0.35)(+0.24), bounding Y-t < 1.54 at a 95% confidence level.Öğe Nuclear modification of Y states in pPb collisions at ?SNN=5.02 TeV(Elsevier, 2022) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Ero, J.; Del Valle, A. EscalanteProduction cross sections of Y(1S), Y(2S), and Y(3S) states decaying into mu(+)mu(-) in proton-lead (pPb) collisions are reported using data collected by the CMS experiment at root S-NN= 5.02 TeV. A comparison is made with corresponding cross sections obtained with ppdata measured at the same collision energy and scaled by the Pb nucleus mass number. The nuclear modification factor for Y(1S) is found to be R-pPb(Y(1S)) = 0.806 +/- 0.024 (stat)+/- 0.059 (syst). Similar results for the excited states indicate a sequential suppression pattern, such that R-pPb(Y(1S)) > R-pPb(Y(2S)) > R-pPb(Y(3S)). The suppression of all states is much less pronounced in pPbthan in PbPbcollisions, and independent of transverse momentum p(T)(Y) and center-of-mass rapidity y(CM)(Y) of the individual Y state in the studied range p(T)(Y) < 30GeV/c and |y(CM)(Y)| < 1.93. Models that incorporate final-state effects of bottomonia in pPb collisions are in better agreement with the data than those which only assume initial-state modifications. (c) 2022 The Author(s). M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.; Dragicevic, M.Signals consistent with the B-c(+)(2S) and B-c*(+)(2S) states are observed in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, in an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 143 fb(-1), collected by the CMS experiment during the 2015-2018 LHC running periods. These excited (b) over barc states are observed in the B-c(+)pi(+)pi(-) invariant mass spectrum, with the ground state B-c(+) reconstructed through its decay to J/psi pi(+). The two states are reconstructed as two well-resolved peaks, separated in mass by 29.1 +/- 1.5(stat) +/- 0.7(syst) MeV. The observation of two peaks, rather than one, is established with a significance exceeding five standard deviations. The mass of the B-c(+)(2S) meson is measured to be 6871.0 +/- 1.2(stat) +/- 0.8(syst) +/- 0.8(B-c(+)) MeV, where the last term corresponds to the uncertainty in the world-average B-c(+) mass.Öğe Search for a heavy resonance decaying to a top quark and a W boson at ?s=13 TeV in the fully hadronic final state(Springer, 2021) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. Escalante; Fruhwirth, R.A search for a heavy resonance decaying to a top quark and a W boson in the fully hadronic final state is presented. The analysis is performed using data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The search is focused on heavy resonances, where the decay products of each top quark or W boson are expected to be reconstructed as a single, large-radius jet with a distinct substructure. The production of an excited bottom quark, b*, is used as a benchmark when setting limits on the cross section for a heavy resonance decaying to a top quark and a W boson. The hypotheses of b* quarks with left-handed, right-handed, and vector-like chiralities are excluded at 95% confidence level for masses below 2.6, 2.8, and 3.1 TeV, respectively. These are the most stringent limits on the b* quark mass to date, extending the previous best limits by almost a factor of two.Öğe Search for CP violating top quark couplings in pp collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Springer, 2023) Tumasyan, A.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Escalante Del Valle, A.; Fruehwirth, R.Results are presented from a search for CP violation in top quark pair production, using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV. The data used for this analysis consist of final states with two charged leptons collected by the CMS experiment, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The search uses two observables, O-1 and O-3, which are Lorentz scalars. The observable O-1 is constructed from the four-momenta of the charged leptons and the reconstructed top quarks, while O-3 consists of the four-momenta of the charged leptons and the b quarks originating from the top quarks. Asymmetries in these observables are sensitive to CP violation, and their measurement is used to determine the chromoelectric dipole moment of the top quark. The results are consistent with the expectation from the standard model.Öğe Search for long-lived particles using delayed photons in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 TeV(Amer Physical Soc, 2019) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.; Dragicevic, M.A search for long-lived particles decaying to photons and weakly interacting particles, using protonproton collision data at root s = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment in 2016-2017 is presented. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 77.4 fb(-1). Results are interpreted in the context of supersymmetry with gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking, where the neutralino is long-lived and decays to a photon and a gravitino. Limits are presented as a function of the neutralino proper decay length and mass. For neutralino proper decay lengths of 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 m, masses up to 320, 525, 360, and 215 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, respectively. We extend the previous best limits in the neutralino proper decay length by up to one order of magnitude, and in the neutralino mass by up to 100 GeV.Öğe Search for low mass vector resonances decaying into quark-antiquark pairs in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13 Tev(Amer Physical Soc, 2019) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.; Dragicevic, M.A search for low mass narrow vector resonances decaying into quark-antiquark pairs is presented. The analysis is based on data collected in 2017 with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 41.1 fb(-1). The results of this analysis are combined with those of an earlier analysis based on data collected at the same collision energy in 2016, corresponding to 35.9 fb(-1). Signal candidates will be recoiling against initial state radiation and are identified as energetic, large-radius jets with two pronged substructure. The invariant jet mass spectrum is probed for a potential narrow peaking signal over a smoothly falling background. No evidence for such resonances is observed within the mass range of 50-450 GeV. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the coupling of narrow resonances to quarks, as a function of the resonance mass. For masses between 50 and 300 GeV these are the most sensitive limits to date. This analysis extends the earlier search to a mass range of 300-450 GeV, which is probed for the first time with jet substructure techniques.Öğe Search for Physics beyond the Standard Model in Events with Overlapping Photons and Jets(Amer Physical Soc, 2019) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.; Dragicevic, M.Results are reported from a search for new particles that decay into a photon and two gluons, in events with jets. Novel jet substructure techniques are developed that allow photons to be identified in an environment densely populated with hadrons. The analyzed proton-proton collision data were collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, in 2016 at root s = 13 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The spectra of total transverse hadronic energy of candidate events are examined for deviations from the standard model predictions. No statistically significant excess is observed over the expected background. The first cross section limits on new physics processes resulting in such events are set. The results are interpreted as upper limits on the rate of gluino pair production, utilizing a simplified stealth supersymmetry model. The excluded gluino masses extend up to 1.7 TeV, for a neutralino mass of 200 GeV and exceed previous mass constraints set by analyses targeting events with isolated photons.Öğe Study of the B+ ? J/?(?)over-barp decay in proton-proton collisions at ?s=8 TeV(Springer, 2019) Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.; Dragicevic, M.A study of the B+-> J/psi = 8 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 fb(-1), is presented. The ratio of branching fractions B+-> J/psi B+-> J/psi K is measured to be (1.054 +/- 0.057(stat) +/- 0.035(syst) +/- 0.011 where the last uncertainty reflects the uncertainties in the world-average branching fractions of and K*(892) (+) decays to reconstructed final states. The invariant mass distributions of the J/psi, J/psi systems produced in the B+-> J/psi decay are investigated and found to be inconsistent with the pure phase space hypothesis. The analysis is extended by using a model-independent angular amplitude analysis, which shows that the observed invariant mass distributions are consistent with the contributions from excited kaons decaying to the (Lambda) over barp system.Öğe Two-particle azimuthal correlations in ?p interactions using pPb collisions at ?sNN=8.16 TeV(Elsevier, 2023) Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Del Valle, A. Escalante; Fruehwirth, R.; Jeitler, M.The first measurements of the Fourier coefficients (V-n Delta) of the azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons emitted from photon-proton (gamma p) interactions are presented. The data are extracted from 68.8nb(-1) of ultra-peripheral proton-lead (pPb) collisions at root s(NN)= 8.16 TeV using the CMS detector. The high energy lead ions produce a flux of photons that can interact with the oncoming proton. This gamma p system provides a set of unique initial conditions with multiplicity lower than in photon-lead collisions but comparable to recent electron-positron and electron-proton data. The V-n Delta coefficients are presented in ranges of event multiplicity and transverse momentum (p(T)) and are compared to corresponding hadronic minimum bias pPb results. For a given multiplicity range, the mean p(T) of charged particles is smaller in gamma p than in pPb collisions. For both the gamma p and pPb samples, V-1 Delta is negative, V-2 Delta is positive, and V-3 Delta consistent with 0. For each multiplicity and p(T) range, V-2 Delta is larger for gamma p events. The gamma p data are consistent with model predictions that have no collective effects. (c) 2023 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Ero, J.The spectra measurements of charged hadrons produced in the shower of a parton originating in the same hard scattering with a leptonically decaying Z boson arc reported in lead-lead nuclei (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. Both Pb-Pb and pp data sets are recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb(-1) and 320 pb(-1), respectively. Hadronic collision data with one reconstructed Z boson candidate with the transverse momentum p(T) > 30 GeV/c are analyzed. The Z boson constrains the initial energy and direction of the associated parton. In heavy ion events, azimuthal angular distributions of charged hadrons with respect to the direction of a Z boson are sensitive to modifications of the in-medium parton shower and medium response. compared to reference data from pp interactions, the results for central Pb-Pb collisions indicate a modification of the angular correlations. The measurements of the fragmentation functions and p(T) spectra of charged particles in Z boson events, which are sensitive to medium modifications of the parton shower longitudinal structure, are also reported. Significant modifications in central Pb-Pb events compared to the pp reference data are also found for these observables.Öğe The very forward CASTOR calorimeter of the CMS experiment(Iop Publishing Ltd, 2021) Khachatryan, V.; Sirunyan, A. M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.The physics motivation, detector design, triggers, calibration, alignment, simulation, and overall performance of the very forward CASTOR calorimeter of the CMS experiment are reviewed. The CASTOR Cherenkov sampling calorimeter is located very close to the LHC beam line, at a radial distance of about 1 cm from the beam pipe, and at 14.4 m from the CMS interaction point, covering the pseudorapidity range of -6.6 < eta < - 5.2. It was designed to withstand high ambient radiation and strong magnetic fields. The performance of the detector in measurements of forward energy density, jets, and processes characterized by rapidity gaps, is reviewed using data collected in proton and nuclear collisions at the LHC.
