Öğe ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS IN THE THRACE REGION AND THE FACTOR ANALYSIS OF THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF THESE PROBLEMS(Scibulcom Ltd, 2014) Apak, S.; Kubas, A.; Hurma, H.; Dede, O.The environmental problems in the Thrace region stem from the industrialisation activities carried out during the last 30 years. There are environmental problems such as air pollution, solid waste, water pollution, unplanned construction, traffic, etc. The surface water pollution is the primary problem of the region. Industrialisation also has a positive effect on the local economy of the region although it creates environmental problems. Therefore solutions to the environmental problems should be both functional and compatible with the regional circumstances. In the present study, socio-economic analysis of the environmental problems in the region has been conducted and it has been found that although there are efforts to solve the said problems, these are far from being sufficient. It is suggested that to maintain a sustainable development in the Thrace region, small- and medium-sized enterprises should use joint treatment plants for their wastewaters. Another solution would be to establish a joint waste collection and processing center for Edirne, Tekirdag and kirklareli provinces. Necessary infrastructure investments should be made considering the previous studies on the environmental measures since the economic development in the region will increase rapidly. All institutions and organisations should cooperate in order to contribute to the solution of the environmental problems.Öğe ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS IN TURKISH THRACE REGION, THEIR CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS(Scibulcom Ltd, 2015) Apak, S.; Kubas, A.; Bal, H.; Hurma, H.; Dede, O.The aim of the present study is to examine the environmental problems experienced in the Turkish Thrace region and their causes. The study assesses the social losses caused by the environmental problems in the region by using cluster analysis and puts forward suggestions for a more habitable region and the sustainable use of natural resources. In order to prevent the environmental problems and socio-economic losses in the region, the study proposes that the wastewater of industrial enterprises, as one of the sources of pollution, should be treated in joint treatment plants, which are considered as the solution of the environmental problems caused by industrialisation and settlements in the region. It is also suggested that the development of positive relations between various state institutions and organisations or local governments and the enterprises would provide the opportunity to contribute more to the socio-economic and cultural structure of the region.Öğe ESTIMATING TIME-VARYING CONDITIONAL CORRELATIONS BETWEEN ECONOMIC GROWTH AND CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS VOLUME(Scibulcom Ltd, 2011) Apak, S.; Kasman, A.; Bal, P.; Torun, E.There has been extensive research on the historical relationship between economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions. Presently, it can be assumed that the high carbon dioxide emissions volume in the world is the result of economic growth. However, over the last couple of decades, increasing awareness about environmental problems, which has resulted from the new realities of the world such as climate change, emphasises the importance of a low-carbon economy. Under these new circumstances that the world faces, many countries, especially in the developed world, have already started to work for the transition to a low-carbon economy. Hence, in some countries, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have started to decelerate despite accelerating economic growth. In this paper, the dynamic conditional correlations (DCC) model is used to estimate time-varying conditional correlations between economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions in the United States of America (USA) between 1800 and 2006. The empirical results indicate that two variables are positively and highly correlated until the 1970's. The results also indicate that volatility in correlation over the period 1800-1970 is low. The results further indicate that the correlation between economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions volume is highly volatile during the period 1970-2006. There seems to be a downward trend in correlation between two variables in this period.Öğe RENEWABLE ENERGY ZONES (REZs) AS A STRATEGIC ALTERNATIVE WITH ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF SUSTAINABILITY. THE CASE OF BALKANS(Scibulcom Ltd, 2011) Apak, S.; Acikgoz, A. F.Renewable energy zones (REZs) have recently been very popular in USA in 2009. The Balkan countries could similarly integrate their individual objectives for the mutual exploit of benefits in renewable energy. Environmental and economic cooperation among the Balkan countries would be attained by REZs in the aspect of continuous energy needs. Energy dependencies for foreign resources, gaps and shortages which are very familiar to the Balkan economies and possible local surplus of the REZs were supposed to be balanced in between the Balkan countries: large national energy zones (NEZs) in the area. Therefore, a synergy would be attained among the REZs in the Balkans. The need of political and diplomatic motivation could be achieved by the suggested Balkan renewable energy charter (BREC). Legal framework would be parallel to the European Union Renewable Energy Directives and Kyoto Protocol seeking environmental value which would be added by REZs. In the study, techniques to provide the development of REZs and the barriers were discussed after a suggested roadmap stating the development phases of the strategic alternative in order to attain independency and sustainability in energy and increased environmental protection for the Balkans.
