Öğe Assessment of storage system benefits on the reliability and the cost of composite electric power systems(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2022) Koksal A.; Ozdemir A.Increasing penetration of intermittent renewable generation and demand uncertainty in electric power systems has accelerated the efforts to improve system reliability. This study presents a method to identify the benefits of the two representative storage systems in composite electric power systems in terms of system reliability and cost-effectivity. At first, the reliability indices of the system are determined using the results of contingency analysis integrated with Monte Carlo simulations. Then the total costs, including the generation, storage, and low-reliability costs, are calculated. The proposed method is applied to the IEEE-RTS-96 test system to quantify the benefits. The two alternatives, namely, Compressed Air Energy Storage Systems (CAES) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), are compared to their overall cost benefits. © 2022 IEEE.Öğe Composite system reliability assessment to reduce the curtailment risk using the storage systems(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2022) Koksal A.; Ozdemir A.The rapidly changing demand requires more flexible power generation to meet the load. At this point, energy storage systems can play a critical role as a supply-demand balancer. This paper introduces a probabilistic and cost-effective storage integration assessment method to achieve a more reliable power system operation. For this purpose, probabilistic power flow values and the load levels, determined by Monte Carlo simulations, are used to calculate the load curtailments (LCs). After obtaining the riskiest load busses for individual and total LCs, the reliability analysis is performed, and the contingency cases are classified using the k-means clustering algorithm. At the final step of the study, the impacts of the storage system on the system reliability and cost-effectivity are compared to identify the best alternative. The proposed assessment is applied to the IEEERTS-96 test system, and the results are discussed. © 2022 IEEE.Öğe Demand forecasting and generation scheduling for a secure and cost-effective operation of power systems(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2022) Koksal A.; Sezgin L.; Ozdemir A.This paper presents a practical approach for demand forecasting and generation scheduling in a power system with solar PV sources and a Compressed Air Energy Storage System. The demand-forecasting method is improved using an artificial neural network in the first stage. After forecasting the demand for several representative days, the cost-effective generation scheduling is achieved for PV generation units and storage systems at the second stage. The proposed forecasting and generation scheduling approaches are tested in IEEE-RTS-96 test system, and the results are discussed from a technical and economic point of view. © 2022 IEEE.Öğe Impacts of protection system misoperation on the reliability of Turkish National Power Transmission System(2011) Ozdemir A.; Bagriyanik M.; Ilisu I.; Gul O.; Kaypmaz A.; Akkaya Y.This paper presents the analysis of relay system to identify the effects of misoperations on system reliability in the Thrace part of Turkish National Power Transmission System comprising 154 kV and 380 kV sub-systems. Since one of the main reasons of the cascading failures is the misoperation of the protection system, this study is concentrated on the analysis of relay system to minimize the risk of occurring cascading events as well as to improve the reliability level of the system. Initially, a detailed system model is constructed according to the collected system data and the protection system data such as relay types, relay settings etc. Simulations are then performed by an integrated power system analysis tool DigSilent Powerfactory software. The system is tested for predefined fault scenarios. Depending upon the consequences of misoperation of the protection system, cascading failure risks and decrease in the reliability level of the system are determined. Simulations and the calculations, cover the distance protection relays and over-current relays. © 2011 IEEE.
