The sample trees were selected from a beechoak- hornbeam mixed stand in the Zonguldak Forest Regional Directorate of the western Black Sea region of Turkey. Following standard methods shear strength and cleavage strength test were performed on sub-samples taken from the field. Data revealed that European Hophornbeam wood has an average 24.505 and 1.132 N/mm2 shear strength and cleavage strength, respectively. The results of the study suggested that European Hophornbeam wood can be used as furniture, flooring material, axles, levers, mallets, splitting wedges, canes, wooden wares, and novelties. Thus Turkish forest service should promote European Hophornbeam in their silvicultural practices.enOstrya carpinifoliaEuropean Hophornbeamshear strengthcleavage strengthDetermination of the Shear and Cleavage Strengths of European Hophornbeam (Ostrya carpinifolia Scop.)
