Gelinlikler toplumun dini inanışına, kültür yapısına ve yaşam şartlarına göre değişiklikler göstermiştir. Gelinler, geçmişten günümüze dek düğünlerde giydikleri elbiselerde çeşitli renklerde lüks kumaşlara işlenmiş nakışlar kullanmışlardır. Beyaz gelinliğin ilk kullanıldığı yer saraylardır. Kayıtlara geçmiş ilk beyaz gelinlik giyen kadın 1499 yılında 12. Louis ile evlenen İngiltereli Anne'dir.
