The Theme of Poverty and Hope in Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol’s The Overcoat and Yaşar Kemal’s The White Trousers

This article presents a comparative analysis of The Overcoat by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol, one of the prominent authors of 19th-century Russian literature, and The White Trousers by Yaşar Kemal, a distinguished figure in 20th-century Turkish literature, focusing on the themes of poverty and hope. A comprehensive literature review revealed that no prior study has examined these two works within this thematic framework, highlighting the originality and scholarly contribution of this research. Both works center on the stories of individuals who display great self-sacrifice and extraordinary effort in their quest to obtain a piece of clothing. In Gogol’s narrative, it is an overcoat; in Kemal’s, a pair of white trousers—both garments become symbolic representations of the protagonists’ dreams. Although the characters differ in terms of age, social status, geographic location, and climate, the emotional struggles they experience and the ways in which they cling to hope reveal striking similarities. In this context, the study emphasizes that poverty and hope are not confined to a specific society or historical period but are instead universal phenomena intrinsic to the human condition. As supported by the reviewed literature, the findings of this study align with existing academic perspectives and are thus validated.

Bu makalede, 19. yüzyıl Rus edebiyatının önemli yazarlarından Nikolay Vasilyeviç Gogol’ün Palto adlı eseri ile 20. yüzyıl Türk edebiyatının güçlü kalemlerinden Yaşar Kemal’in Beyaz Pantolon adlı öyküsü, yoksulluk ve umut temaları ekseninde karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmektedir. Yapılan kapsamlı literatür taraması sonucunda, söz konusu iki eseri bu tematik bağlamda ele alan herhangi bir çalışmaya rastlanmaması, araştırmanın özgünlüğünü ve akademik katkısını ortaya koymaktadır. Her iki eser de, bir giysiye sahip olabilmek adına büyük bir özveri ve insanüstü çaba sergileyen bireylerin hikâyesine odaklanmaktadır. Gogol’ün eserinde bir palto, Kemal’in öyküsünde ise beyaz bir pantolon, karakterlerin hayalleriyle özdeşleşen nesnelere dönüşmektedir. Kahramanlar yaş, sosyal statü, coğrafi konum ve iklim gibi açılardan farklılık gösterseler de, sergiledikleri duygusal mücadele ve umuda tutunuş biçimleri açısından dikkat çekici benzerlikler taşımaktadır. Bu bağlamda, yoksulluk ve umudun yalnızca belirli bir toplum ya da dönemle sınırlı olmadığı, aksine insanlık durumuna içkin evrensel olgular olduğu vurgulanmaktadır. İncelenen literatürün de gösterdiği üzere, çalışmadan elde edilen veriler, mevcut akademik yaklaşımlarla örtüşmekte ve bu çerçevede doğrulanmaktadır.
