Abstract
This research aims to compare the emotional intelligence of the university students studying sciences and social sciences in terms of some sub-dimensions such as gender, age and the student's field. Personal Information Form and Emotional Intelligence Assessment Scale were used as a data collection tool. Two hundred and seventy-two university students who were studying at İstanbul Kültür University Vocational School participated in the study. One hundred and forty-nine of the participants were female and 123 of them were male. Participants of this study were studying Child Development (N=103), Public Relations and Publicity (N=59), Elekctronic Technology (N=42) and Aircraft Technology (N=68). The data of the study was analysed by using SPSS version 21 statistical program. Independent t test was used to determine whether there is a difference between emotional intelligence levels and sub-dimension scores of the individuals. The results of the study indicated that there was a significant difference between gender and the level of emotional intelligence. According to the results, women's emotional intelligence levels were higher than men's emotional intelligence levels. According to results of the correlation analysis between the levels of the participants' emotional intelligence and participants' ages, there was a negative and low level relationship between age and the level of emotional intelligence.ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis H test were used to analyse whether students' fields (sciences or social sciences) have an effective role on their levels of emotional intelligence. According to the results of these analyses, there was a significant difference between the level of the emotional intelligence and the student's field. In addition, Mann Whitney U and t-test were used to find out if there is a significant relationship between the individuals' fields (sciences or social sciences) and individuals' emotional intelligence levels. The results of these tests showed that emotional intelligence levels of social sciences students were higher than science students. Key Words : Emotional Intelligence, University Students, Social Science,Science
